In the last century most companies were managed through a reactional system, but as we moved into the 21st century, management began to realize that a relational system was more productive. Inspiration, authenticity, and personal credibility became the bottom line.  However, before any changes can take place, corporate executives must be willing to lead by example, and empower subordinates.

Terry Barber, a speaker for corporate training and events, offers readers seven principles.  With a 12-week process he takes the reader through an explanation of each principle, as well as outcome objectives and exercises to complete.  For example, one outcome objective for Week One is “You will be able to clearly identify what inspires each of your team members and your key customers/clients.”  One exercise, with focus on the objective, is to “Ask your team to think about their customers and clients.  How would they rate their inspiration factor in these relationships? . . . As you discuss their answers with each team member, talk about the inspirational relationship you have with your own customers and clients.”  Once the exercises are complete, the executive is “Going Deeper” by answering questions posed to him or her.  One such question is “How is each individual contributing to this effort?  In what aspects of work does each team member feel most fulfilled? Most frustrated?”

“The Inspiration Factor” is a teaching tool.  It inspires the manager to inspire team members through listening, encouragement and support; and most of all to find out what motivates them to succeed and represent their company in highest regard.  Barber fully supports the true meaning of the term “team.” He encourages honesty and recognition of defining moments within the structure.

Revitalization of the company culture is possible and in the 21st century necessary. Gone are the days of manipulation and threats; in are the days of inspiration and support.  Authentic relationships will move companies and people to positive change and survival in economic distress.  Barber offers ways for this transition.

Well-written, concise, and easy -to-follow, “The Inspiration Factor” by Terry Barber may be the only tool distressed companies need.  As well, I believe this book should be part of MBA curriculum to cover the aspects of management that aren’t addressed or encouraged.
