In “Hell’s Corner,” Oliver Stone and the Camel Club reunite to investigate a bizarre incident that occurred near the White House.  Stone had just been enlisted by the President of the United States for an undercover assignment when Lafayette Park comes under attack.  Massive gunfire is followed by an explosion.  Stone must figure out if the incidents are related or coincidental.  When it appears the British Prime Minister was the target of the attack, MI6 agent Mary Chapman is sent to work with Stone.  But when too many things do not add up, Stone must dig deeper to uncover the truth.  What he finds is not only mind-blowing, but also a potentially debilitating threat to America's security.

Those who are familiar with Baldacci’s previous works will notice a different side of Oliver Stone in this book.  He is very introspective - questioning whether his skills have waned as he has gotten older.  He also mulls over why he was given the assignment by President Brennan in the first place.  Was it because he is a high achiever or is it a punitive measure for his past actions?  Stone begins to ponder whether some of his previous activities were justified or based on revenge.

Baldacci creates an incredible plot by creating many intermingled background stories.  Russian and Mexican drug cartels, government informants, and possible moles are prominently featured.  The action moves at a rapid pace and many plot twists are included which keep the reader anxious to see what will happen next.  At times it seems that none of the characters are who they appear to be.  Their secrets and hidden agendas keep them all under suspicion.  I enjoyed the author’s method of systematically uncovering the evidence and immediately portraying the ensuing investigation into it.  I find this technique easier to follow than finding evidence but not pursuing leads until further chapters.

David Baldacci comes through with another winner.  “Hell’s Corner” will appeal to both males and females alike.  The characters are intriguing, although there may have been a few too many of them.  The story is exceptional and the reader will have a difficult time putting this book down.  Anyone looking for a good action adventure should read this book.
