After the death of her grandfather, Kelly McBride leaves her city life to live on his ranch. Kelly is intrigued with the idea that there is a possibility that gold is hidden somewhere on the property. Upon finding the gold, she learns that it is protected by the ghost of an Indian warrior named Blue Crow. Blue Crow not only died for this gold, his ghost has spent over 100 years protecting it. He only allows people who find it to take what they need. Having been alone for so long, he also finds himself drawn to Kelly.
Lee Roan Horse, a descendant of Blue Crow, has also come to town to find the missing gold. In doing so, he finds Kelly. Getting her to allow him to work for room and board provides him with the opportunity to get closer to both the gold and Kelly. As Blue Crow haunts the present, Lee Roan Horse is haunted by his past. He harbors serious, bitter resentments towards those who have persecuted him because of his Indian blood.
Kelly finds herself being drawn to both men. She also realizes that she is in danger from greedy people who are after her gold. Initially, she finds it difficult to trust Lee because of his past; however, her feelings for him continue to grow. Actually her feelings for both men grow stronger. She has to figure out who she can trust to help save herself, the gold and the ranch. Things heat up pretty quickly.
“Heart of the Hunter” is the perfect book to curl up with on a rainy day, which is exactly what I did. I found the story to be very moving and loved the paranormal elements involving the ghost. I found it interesting that both heroes were haunted by their pasts, even though one was dead and the other alive -- but inside he didn’t become truly alive until he got closer to the heroine. “Heart of the Hunter” is another great story by Madeline Baker. It definitely will be enjoyed by all fans of romance.
