Kim’s ConfessionsWilson Awasu
“Kim’s Confessions” is presented as a short narrative – presumably fiction – of main character, Kim, and her spiritual journey during her church’s Radical Growth seminar. Kim grows from feeling established as a member of God’s chosen and proud of her family’s long Presbyterian heritage to realizing her less than humble attitude has made her a skeptic, a rebel, and just plain self-deceived. “Kim’s Confessions” seeks to allow the reader to follow her story through her eyes in order to ask the questions of themselves and apply the lessons in their own lives. Written in the first person, “Kim’s Confessions” is aptly self-described as part spiritual history and part guidebook. The story around the Radical Growth seminar – again, presumably fiction – gives the lesson direction and urges the reader to actively participate. While the story is interesting and unfolds at an appropriate pace, I didn’t find it particularly moving on an emotional level. The character development just wasn’t enough for me to really relate to Kim therefore I had a hard time sharing in her transformational joy. It did end on a pleasing note and nicely captured the author’s intent of detailing the Radical Growth process. I also liked the cover design – very simple, timeless, and descriptive without being ‘busy.’ “Kim’s Confessions” would be a nice pick for either the individual or a small group Bible study. Broken down into sections and further into chapters, author Wilson Awasu makes it easy to digest the message in small pieces while giving ample opportunities for discussion and application. Further, the book is written with language appropriate for any age and experience level; young and old as well as new and established Christians would be able to relate to its purpose and significance. Well edited and organized, “Kim’s Confessions” would be an interesting addition to any church library. “Kim’s Confessions” is an easy-to-read, easy-to-apply lesson book focused on the Radical Growth concept. Author Wilson Awasu utilizes scriptural references to ground his logic in Bible teachings while using his character, ‘Kim’ to guide the overall progress of the lessons. While not as emotionally moving as I expected, I still got something positive out of the message. |
