Brighid Garvey has the gift of second sight. She is able to see ghosts, which is not always a plus, and she is able to predict gambling winnings. Brighid and Everett Grey’s lives become intertwined one night when she finds him too inebriated to defend himself against some local thugs. They are trying to steal a sack from him. At the encouragement of the ghost of her grandmother, Brighid rescues him, and brings him back to her poor dwellings. She discovers an infant in the sack. Brighid is already caring for her own newborn and a special little girl. Everett is in need of a wet nurse for his child. Caring for these three children unites them, however, they have difficulties learning to trust each other because of lies from the past that have affected relationships that they both have with their families.

Brighid agrees to journey with Everett and the children to San Francisco. She is hoping to escape from some demons in her past. The ghost of her grandmother follows and assists her along the way. On the journey, she and Everett learn to trust and to love each other. They begin rebuilding their lives together as a family. Unfortunately, Brighid discovers that some of the people that she was hoping to escape have followed her. She has to let her guard down and let Everett know what is going on. Everett and Brighid’s grandmother both protect her and the children as they move on with their life.

Andrews has a talent of writing her words so vividly that you feel like you are right in the midst of the drama, living it right along with the characters. The antics of the ghost of Brighid’s grandmother make you laugh out loud. This is a totally enjoyable historical romance. It is not a light frivolous story. The touches of humor are wonderful. I recommend this story to all fans of historical romance novels, especially to women’s reader groups. This would be a great story to share and discuss.
