Mere milkmaid, Sancha, disguised herself as a widowed, noble woman, so that she could travel to the New World with De Soto’s expedition to find gold. As a young girl she’d fallen in love with Diego. She still loved him but she would not settle for being his mistress, she wanted to be his wife. She was surprised to find him on board the ship. Once in the New World, the two share a tent so that Diego might protect Sancha from the soldiers that would take her by force. When the gossips tongues began to waggle, Diego offered to marry her. She questioned his motives; did he want to marry her or just bed her? In his eyes, she could see his love for her and she placed her trust in him. Despite a storm, Diego searched for a priest and made her his wife. Just as a storm brewed outside a storm of passion brewed in their tent. Their hearts ached for the enslavement of the Indio people. Diego has become “a man that looks at the goodness of people rather than their heritage or class.”
“Conquest”, a short story by Cornelia Amiri, is a story of love, love of a man and woman and love for humankind. Sancha is a beautiful woman, branded in her country as an “evil peasant woman intent on seducing the noble sons.” She has a kind heart and a wholesome nature. Diego has loved Sancha most of his life, but in his country she was a peasant and his mother would never approve of their relationship. Sancha teaches Diego to look at the goodness of people. The plot is simple yet carries a beautiful statement; you should always look for the good in people. I recommend “Conquest” to fans of romance.
