It is the eve of Meru Tanner’s thirtieth birthday.  To escape from a relationship gone bad she recently moved to be near her Druid aunt so that she can help her run her metaphysical shop.  Meredith has been given “The Book of Veils,” as a birthday gift.  Mysteriously, the pages appear to be blank.  Inside the book, she finds a slip of paper that has a druid spell on it which is written in an ancient language.  For those who invoke it, it alters their ordinary perceptions so that they can see “Others” who are from other realms.   Translating the spell, Meru then invokes it.  She can now see people for who they truly are.  She quickly discovers that most people really aren’t people, but magical beings.  This is not always a plus, especially with some of the dark ones.

Meredith’s cousin made arrangements for her to have some strippers perform for her as a birthday gift.  She mistakenly assumes that three gorgeous men who show up at their bar are these strippers.  They are actually there to help protect Meru.  Damon, a lycan, is a warrior and a guardian.  He finds himself mesmerized by Meru.  Using her sight, she quickly sees that he is not human.  She is also drawn to him.

Meru learns that she is meant to fulfill a prophecy.  To do this, she has to seek out the “Cup of Inspiration.”  There are others, I mean “Others” who want to control the power.  She needs Damon to help her overcome their enemies and survive.  Finding herself in love with Damon, she finds herself acting out her desires with him.  He is a powerful lover, which makes for some interesting erotic scenes.

“Lifting the Veil” contains so many elements of a great story; there is magic, humor, romance, eroticism, an adventure and ancient mythological history.  Plus the men are really sexy!  I loved reading this tale.  I hope that Ms. Alexander gives some of the other characters in it a chance to have their own stories told.  This is definitely one not to be missed.
