A Worthy Legacy
After her father’s death in a car accident, Tomi Akinyanmi wants to relive the wisdom and love she received. She puts herself in a granddaughter’s role and travels to her village to see her grandfather before he passes away. As the family gathers to bid farewell to a wonderful wise man, he tells them he has no material riches to leave with them but he has some things he needs to say that will stay with them forever. Through these words, the family receives richness that many people take for granted, or forget completely. Even though the grandfather is taking his last breaths, he does not feel regret for anything he has done in life nor does he complain about his time to leave the earthly world. He is somewhat saddened that he will not be on the earth to guide his children and grandchildren, but remains positive that if they heed his words they will live a rich and full life. As I read this book, I thought of my own father prior to his passing. He was not educated and he didn’t have riches, but was there every step of the way until his passing. Just as my dad did, Tomi’s grandfather imparted his wisdom. From his musings on character, pride and self-respect, he tells the family that they must remember to be humble, loving and caring toward others. Holding grudges will only break your heart; we must learn to listen and forgive. In “A Worthy Legacy,” the author, Tomi Akinyanmi, makes one look at their life and evaluate where they are. There is no lecture, no preaching or condemning - only words of love and joy. If you really listen, you will learn how to be an honorable person who lives in the present, with goals to reach.
