Is Your Book Promotion Ad-Copy Smelling of Ad-Speak?

Irene Watson

Today I'm going to encourage you to look at your written publicity efforts to see if you have fallen into the ad-speak no-no category.  Ad-speak means your ads or web content sound like ads.  Ad-speak is content filled will meaningless words and cliché phrases in an effort to entice your potential reader to buy your book.

Before we go any further, I suggest you watch this video first:

In the last century ad-speak worked, or we thought it did.  But when you look at the content it is actually imploring if not bribing. It doesn't work anymore.  Writers of ad-speak assume the potential buyer will pay attention to the message and get pushed to buy the product.  Not so.  Think about TV ads running now.  When an ad-speak ad comes on, I venture to say you put it on mute or flip to another channel.

However, when an ad like this comes on, I venture to say to will watch it:

When promoting your book  relevancy  is of utmost importance.  (Yes, I know...I keep harping on this!)  Writing content to entice your potential readers is easy when  you have something to say. But, it has to be something new, fills a need, and is relevant. It must be of interest to the reader.   Information is a powerful tool  so give your potential readers the information they desire.

In the Old Spice ad the focus is on women and not the men that would wear the product.  It fills the need of a woman, not the man. Tickets, diamonds, and a man on a horse.  Those are needs of a woman.  Need I say more?  What needs does your book fill?  Who is your target audience?

A marketing expert and author, Tom Wanek,  has taken Carlin's cliché phrases, added some of his own, and created a free tool to rate your ad-copy.  So, go to your own ad, or website, and copy your promotional piece of advertising. Then paste it in this calculator:

Do you need to revamp your content?  Is your content relevant?  Fills a need?  Tell me your observations here.

Writers in the Sky Award for the Best Creative Writing of the Year

Until the Deep Water Stills: An Internet-Enhanced Novel by Michael Robert Dyet

Idiomatic (2009)
ISBN 9780981199504

Michael Robert Dyet grew up in the idyllic town of Hagersville in the Southern Ontario region of Canada, where words began to spin in his mind in search for that sudden light. Following college Dyet briefly embarked on a career as a reporter-photographer. In the mid 70’s Michael Dyet found his way into the Creative Writing program at York University. His four years there were spent attempting to discover what kind of writer he was.

As the pilgrimage continued Michael earned his keep in the marketing profession as a copywriter, a manager and various specialist roles. Learning to sell with words was a formative experience in his journey to becoming a novelist. So too were a deepening spiritual awareness and an enduring love of nature. Eleven years of marriage and a divorce later, Michael Dyet had finally amassed the life experience to dive into the task of writing a novel. The sudden light at last shone through in his debut novel, Until the Deep Water Stills: An Internet-Enhanced Novel.

Synopsis: For Katherine Orr the words ‘I love you” are not enough. Only a demonstrative expression of her husband Jayce’s love can rescue their relationship. But Jayce’s personal demons prevent him from giving her this even though she is all that keeps him from a descent into chaos.

Simultaneously, Bryan struggles to repair the breach of love in his life caused by his daughter’s death. But his wife, Jayce’s sister, grows ever more distant. Social activist Faith, who longs for love but fears losing herself in it, becomes the catalyst for change in all four lives. The paths of these four converge toward a tragic event. Each discovers in their own way that love is the living core of human existence and that how we love defines who we are.
